MEMORIAL DAY IN TEXAS

A Time of Reflection, Celebration, and Caution.
As the unofficial start to summer, Memorial Day weekend in Texas is a time of reflection, celebration, and, unfortunately, increased risk. This holiday honors those who have died serving in the U.S. military. Texans observe it with a mix of solemn remembrance and festive gatherings. However, it is also one of the busiest and deadliest holidays in Texas.
Texans embrace the long weekend with gusto. Many people host family barbecues. Others are going on road trips, hitting the beach, and enjoying the numerous outdoor activities Texas has to offer. I remember, as a child, driving from Fort Worth to South Padre Island to soak up the sun and kick off the summer season.

The Traffic Surge: A Risky Road Ahead
One of the reasons Memorial Day is particularly hazardous in Texas is the significant increase in traffic. With millions of Texans taking to the roads for holiday getaways, our highways and interstates become congested. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, Memorial Day weekend consistently sees a spike in both the number of vehicles on the road and the number of traffic accidents.
The combination of heavy traffic, long travel distances, and often high-speed driving creates a perilous mix. In 2023, there were over 400 traffic fatalities in Texas during the Memorial Day weekend, highlighting the need for caution. Contributing factors include distracted driving, speeding, and, unfortunately, driving under the influence of alcohol.

Stay Safe - Celebrate Responsibly
- Plan Your Trip: Avoid peak travel times if possible and plan your route to include rest stops. Ensure your vehicle is in good working condition before hitting the Texas roads.
- Drive Responsibly: Follow traffic laws, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. Designate a Driver.
- Beat The Heat: Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and take breaks in the shade to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Let’s embrace the spirit of Memorial Day with both Reverence and Responsibility.
